“REVIVING THE MAGIC OF CHINESE OPERA”: SHS informal knowledge sharing session. Registration: 5:30pm, session begins 5:50pm. Free for SHS members. RM10 for non-members (you are expected to purchase your own drinks or snacks at the cafe). In English.

Chinese Opera has attracted interest in the ‘SHS Community’ WhatsApp chat group (if you’re not on the chat, what are you waiting for? 😊). A brief overview will be given by SHS VP James Yong and SHS member John Soo, followed by some short videos. We have also invited a few local opera performers to join and talk about their techniques. The rest of the session will be open for free form dialogue. (This is planned to be part of a regular SHS meet-and-share series)

Chinese Opera (whether Teochew, Hokkien, Hainanese, Cantonese, etc) is an art form that is part of the intangible cultural heritage of Sarawak. Its popularity is declining, the number of performers is dwindling and their average age increasing. Should it be preserved in Sarawak, and if so, how?

To help us manage the logistics, please let us know in advance if you plan to attend, by WhatsApp or sms to +6018 988 2343 or by email to sarawakheritagesociety@gmail.com.

If your membership fees are due, you will be able to settle them at the venue.
