SHS was represented by 3 members at a recent workshop organised by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak on the UNESCO “Memory of the World”(MoW) programme.

MoW is one of the 3 main initiatives of UNESCO in heritage conservation (alongside the better known World Heritage Sites programme and the programme to protect Intangible Heritage). It aims at safeguarding documentary of heritage against collective amnesia, neglect, the ravages of time and climatic conditions, wilful and deliberate destruction, and calls for the preservation of valuable archival holdings, library collections and private individual compendia all over the world.

A representative from the UNESCO regional office, Jakarta, presented the MoW programme and facilitated the workshop. Pustaka Negeri Sarawak has set up a Sarawak secretariat for the programme. Several suggestions emerged as items from Sarawak possibly eligible for MoW registration.

At this free and open-to-all session, Audrey Neng and Donna Yong, SHS members, will share information gathered from the 2-day MoW workshop and will open an informal discussion on the MoW programme from the Sarawak perspective.
