Our next talk in the SHS Heritage Speaker Series, entitled ‘Communing with the Dark Side‘ will focus on Borneo’s Masks and Masquerades.
We usually associate tribal masks with African and Melanesian cultures, but they are also part of our rich cultural heritage. This illustrated talk will discuss the different masquerade cultures of the major ethnic groups of Borneo.
The speaker, Dr. Michael Heppell has studied Iban adat and child rearing practices, as well as those of the Bidayuh and Ukit and their social organization. He has published books on Iban art and textiles, and his book ‘Communing with the Dark Side’ was published by the Borneo Research Council. Dr. Heppel is currently based in Australia.
