Also, if you are not an assiduous reader of the Borneo Post, you may not have seen the column published on 18 Oct. 2015 on the ‘Golden Bridge’ project (as illustrated above, a showy pedestrian bridge across the Sarawak river from the Old Court House to the DUN, Kuching’s State Assembly complex).

Looking at the practicality and economics of the bridge, in particular on its proposed location, the author recalls the demolition of the old Gambier street market buildings a few years ago. Emotions were particularly high in our heritage-loving community.
One question could be added : does the design of the bridge blend in with the priceless heritage-laden area around the Court House complex?

Thanks for forwarding that article. I don’t think the bridge captures the “Heritage” image of the surrounding Court House, old Jail, Astana etc.
In the original announcement it was mentioned “Pedestrian & Bicycle” bridge….but the security guards along the river are very rude and surly toward cyclists and i fear the bicycles may be banned from using the new bridge….which would be a big deterrant to bicycling in Kuching. Also the bridge should connect to the new elevated River Front BoardWalk extending up river from Kpg Gersik to the New Dun and a connector made to allow access to Fort Margherita….too. This will make a nice circle cycle & walk with a sampan crossing at Pangkalang Batu (Kpg Gersik).
